I’m currently leading a two session “Membership Matters” class at our church. I’ve done this before and think it is a needed way to help folks understand the need for church membership, what it means, and who we are as a church.
I’ve written often about the struggles in American church life. I believe this is a positive approach (not because I’m doing it) that can help churches with church health.
Some traditions have organized new membership classes that integrate folks into the church. Baptists have done this poorly. Often in Baptist churches folks would walk an aisle, pray, be baptized and that’s it. Then they would be asked to serve in jobs and little attention was given to membership.
This approach is a step that comes even before the decision to join happens. This is a time for folks to explore what and who we are before they do join. It’s a time to see what this is about. Then if they join they better understand their decision.
I wish I had more time for such a class. Ideally four weeks would be good. But with schedules and such it is hard to add one more thing to the plate. Many of the folks coming are already coming to a Sunday School class and one hates to take them out of that for a month. The relationship building in those settings is so rich that they need that. And so a few weeks or a long session with food that is an orientation to a church is a good approach.
I hope to have these classes several times a year or as need arrives. But there are four questions I explore:
1. Why should I join a/this church?
2. Who and what is this church?
3. How do I join this church?
4. What do I do after I join?
These four questions are vital and important. We need a healthy understanding of the church and the particular church we are considering joining. This is a big decision and we need to realize no church is perfect but we also need to make sure that we the particular church we are exploring is one that connects with us theologically, personally, etc.
We also need to understand the mechanics of the church. Once we understand the theology, vision, identity, and history of a church we need to then learn the nuts and bolts. How does the church work? How are decisions made? What is the leadership structure? What does the church do and how does it relate to ministry in and outside the walls of the church?
And finally once we do join what will we do in the church? What is our responsibility? What are the needs of the church? It isn’t all about what the church can do for me but also what can I bring to this body?
Church membership should matter. Those who belong should be responsible members. Church health is crucial. We need to be a vibrant, dynamic, and forward thinking church.
Blessings!
